The advantages and process of placing a dental bridge (vs. an implant)

Discover in this article the advantages and the process of fitting a dental bridge.

Losing a tooth is never insignificant. Beyond the "gap" in your smile that can be socially awkward, the entire balance of your jaw is threatened. Neighboring teeth shift, the opposing tooth "drops," and the bone resorbs.

To fill this gap, a dental bridge remains the fastest and most proven fixed solution. But is it still the best option compared to modern implants?

🦷 Bridge or Implant?

Does your bone allow for the placement of an artificial root, or do you need to rely on your natural teeth?

What exactly is a dental bridge?

As its name suggests (meaning "bridge" in English), a bridge spans the gap left by a missing tooth. It is a fixed prosthesis composed of at least three elements:

  • Two "pillar" crowns: They cover the adjacent teeth (those bordering the hole).

  • The "bridge" (the intermediary): The false tooth suspended in the middle that replaces the one you lost.

Unlike dentures, a bridge is cemented (bonded). It cannot be removed. You brush your teeth normally.

The installation process: How does it work?

Creating a dental bridge is quick and generally requires no surgery. It is done in 2 or 3 appointments:

  1. Preparing the pillars: This is the crucial (and irreversible) step. For the bridge to stay in place, the dentist must "shape" the two adjacent teeth to create a stump shape. This is the price to pay for stability.

  2. The digital footprint: We scan your jaw in 3D so that the laboratory can manufacture a bridge perfectly adapted to your occlusion.

  3. Installation (Sealing): A few days later, the ceramic bridge is tried in, adjusted, and permanently bonded. You leave with a huge smile.

⚠️ Are your neighboring teeth healthy?

If the teeth that are to serve as support are fragile or devitalized, the bridge is likely to break in the medium term.

The major advantages of bridge

Why choose a bridge rather than an implant?

  • Speed: It's all sorted out in 10 to 15 days. The implant requires 3 to 6 months of bone healing.

  • Aesthetics: Modern ceramics perfectly imitate enamel. The result is invisible.

  • Comfort: It's fixed. 95% of its masticatory force is immediately restored.

  • No surgery: Ideal for diabetic patients, smokers or those with insufficient bone volume for an implant.

The dilemma: Bridge or Implant?

This is the question all our patients ask themselves.

  • The advantage of the implant: It replaces the root without affecting the neighboring teeth. You're not "sacrificing" two healthy teeth to replace one. It also stimulates the bone to prevent it from resorbing.

  • The advantage of Bridge: It is often better reimbursed and faster.

The medical verdict: If your neighboring teeth are already damaged (fillings, crowns), a bridge is an excellent option because it protects them while filling the gap. If your neighboring teeth are healthy (perfect), it's a shame to grind them down: an implant is then preferable.

Conclusion: Don't leave any empty space

Whether you choose a bridge or an implant, the urgency is the same: replace the missing tooth. The longer you wait, the more the neighboring teeth will shift, making any future treatment more complex and expensive (requiring orthodontic treatment to straighten teeth before fitting the prosthesis).
