Discovering a black, gray, or yellow spot on a child's tooth is always a shock for a parent. The immediate thought is often baby bottle tooth decay or poor hygiene. However, in many cases, the toothbrush is not the cause.
Iron, chromogenic bacteria, unnoticed trauma... The causes are numerous and often "unexpected." The good news? Most of these stains are superficial and can be removed with a suitable professional cleaning.
Does your child need a simple cleaning or more intensive care?
Some spots can indicate the beginning of demineralization. Don't remain in doubt.
Black spots (Bacterial border)
This is the number one reason for consultation that worries parents. You see a small black line following the gum, like coffee residue, even though your child only drinks water?
Rest assured: these are often «"chromogenic bacteria"».
It's what ? A chemical reaction between saliva (often rich in iron) and certain bacteria in the oral flora.
Is it serious? Absolutely not. Paradoxically, children who have this type of spotting often have less of cavities than others!
The solution: A simple, gentle polishing at the dentist's office is enough to remove everything.
Yellow or orange spots
Here, the cause is often more classic: it's the plaque which has accumulated and calcified.
The cause: Insufficient or ineffective brushing (often in the evening).
The risk: If this plaque remains, the gum will become inflamed (gingivitis) and cavities can develop underneath.
The solution: Reintroduce proper brushing techniques and perform a dental cleaning appropriate for the child's age.
⚠️ Has your child taken antibiotics?
Some medications (such as tetracycline, although rare today, or iron supplements) can color the tooth mass.
The white spots (The most insidious)
Contrary to popular belief, a "chalky white" stain is often more worrying than a black stain.
Fluorosis: Excess fluoride during tooth formation. These are irreversible but harmless white/pearly spots.
Demineralization (MIH or early caries): This is an area where the enamel has become porous and fragile. It's the gateway to tooth decay. We must act quickly to remineralize the tooth before it breaks.
The gray tooth (Old trauma)
Did your child fall in the playground three months ago? A tooth (often a baby tooth) can turn gray or pink long after an impact. This means that the nerve of the tooth has been affected (necrosis).
Is it urgent? Yes, you should consult a dentist to check that there is no infection (abscess) that could damage the permanent tooth (the germ) growing just underneath.
The gray tooth (Old trauma)
Above all, don't try NEVER Avoid rubbing your child's teeth with baking soda, lemon, or adult whitening products. The enamel of baby teeth and young permanent teeth is much thinner and more permeable. You risk causing irreversible pain.
The only safe solution is professional diagnosis followed by cleaning (air polishing or gentle ultrasonic descaling).
