Discover in this article the usefulness of LEDs for teeth whitening.
You've probably seen those ads on Instagram: a blue light-up tray in your mouth to get a Hollywood smile in 20 minutes. LED (Light Emitting Diode) whitening has become the star of cosmetic dentistry.
But let's be clear: light alone doesn't whiten anything at all. It's an accelerator. If you use an LED lamp without the correct medical product, you'll only end up with... illuminated teeth.
Can your teeth react to LED technology?
Some hair dyes (grey, medicated) are completely immune to this treatment. Don't pay for nothing.
How does LED technology actually work?
The principle is scientific: it is about photo-activation. Teeth whitening relies on a gel (hydrogen peroxide or carbamide) that opens the pores of the enamel to dislodge stains.
The role of the LED lamp (this specific cool blue light) is to act as a catalyst. It excites the molecules in the gel to:
Accelerate the chemical reaction: What used to take 2 hours now only takes 45 minutes.
Intensify penetration: The bleaching agent penetrates deeper, faster.
The trap of home kits: The kits sold online contain very weak LED lamps and, most importantly, extremely low-concentration gels (less than 0.1% of peroxide according to European law). The result? You're activating… water. The effectiveness is practically nil.
Why does only LED whitening in the office work?
The difference lies in one number: the concentration. In the dental practice, we are allowed to use much stronger gels (up to 6% or more under strict conditions), because we protect your gums.
The Professional Lamp: It heats up very little (so as not to damage the pulp of the tooth) but emits a precise wavelength that "unlocks" the whitening agent.
The Result: In one "chair" session (approximately 1 hour), you can gain 2 to 3 shades, where it would take 3 weeks of wearing trays at home.
⚠️ Caution: Sensitive teeth
The light activation is intense. If you have micro-fissures, the session may be painful.
Contraindications: When LED therapy is ineffective
This is the most important point of this article. LED technology isn't magic. It doesn't work NOT on :
Crowns and veneers: Ceramic does not whiten. If you whiten your natural teeth, your crowns will appear yellow by contrast.
Devitalized teeth: A grey (dead) tooth needs internal bleaching, not external bleaching.
Tetracycline stains: These grey/brown streaks caused by antibiotics in childhood often require veneers, as whitening alone is not enough.
Conclusion: Technology, yes, but not just any way
LED teeth whitening is a fantastic technique for a quick brightening effect (before a wedding, an interview, or simply to treat yourself). It's the ultimate "express" solution.
However, this is a medical procedure that temporarily alters the structure of your enamel. It should never be performed without a prior examination of your gums and any existing fillings.
